In pursuant to a new congressional mandate, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require the screening of 50 percent of all cargo transported on passenger aircraft effective February 1, 2009. By August of 2010, 100 percent of cargo transported on passenger aircraft will have to be screened.
Cargo can be screened by an airline or by a Certified Cargo Screening Facility (CCSF). Cargo booked for a passenger aircraft that is not screened by a CCSF must be tendered loose. Shippers should anticipate possible cargo move delays, backlogs and increase in transit time.
Screening fees vary based on airline and CCSF. Some airlines are not applying any screening fee charges. Most CCSFs will assess screening fees based on actual piece count.
